“One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world.” – Malala Yousafzai
Most schools in Puerto Vallarta do not have libraries and there is only one public library in all Puerto Vallarta. Books are out of reach to everyone in the poor neighbourhoods. In 2009, Compassionet Impact Development Canada partnered with CI Mexico to create a mobile library for children in Colonia Magisterio. Until 2012, once a week children came with their mothers and eagerly checked out books while others lined up proudly to return last week’s reading. Volunteers sat with children in reading circles and encouraged Mums to see what was available.
In 2012, CIDC and CI Mexico opened a ‘permanent’ library at Arroyo de Esperanza in Colonia Salitrillo. A CIDC volunteer helped to organize the library and trained local women to run the library as their own. In May 2013, the permanent library of over 1,000 books for children and adults moved to La Vina in Colonia Laguna del Valle where local volunteers open up for check outs and returns every Saturday.
CIDC continues to purchase books every year, receive donations of Spanish books, and hope to plant another community library soon.
